For the second day of the week-long action to Stand Up to Dominion’s $76 Million Rip-Off, we drew attention to the extreme weather Virginians are facing – worsened by our planet’s rising temperatures – while Dominion drags its feet on Virginia-made renewable energy. Undeterred by the threat of thunderstorms, supporters turned out to picket outside Dominion’s office and call for the company to earn the $76 million bonus it is receiving in the name of renewable energy.
Local gardener Patricia Stansbury first spoke to the crowd about her own experiences dealing with higher temperatures and changing growing seasons affected by climate change. The USDA’s Plant Hardiness Zone Map this year showed that most of the United States is generally one half-zone warmer than in the past, representing a shift toward warmer average winter temperatures.
On top of changing temperatures, all Virginians are being hit by more frequent severe storms. The Sierra Club’s Glen Besa showed pictures of the damage his house suffered when a tree fell on the roof during Hurrican Irene in 2011.
Carrying signs and armed with 400 petitions from like-minded Virginians, the protesters today picketed Dominion to send the message that we won’t stand by while Dominion not only takes a $76 million bonus in the name of renewable energy without investing in Virginia-made wind or solar power, but also continues to invest in the fossil fuels that are wreaking havoc on our climate.
It’s time for Dominion to earn the bonus and help bring Virginians the stable climate, clean environment and good jobs by investing in clean wind and solar power in the commonwealth.
