Join the Truth Squad

Do you ever get frustrated with the mainstream media’s portrayal of global warming? Do you yearn for the opportunity to get up on a soapbox and let people know what the truth about global warming is? The Virginia Global Warming Media Truth Squad is a list of on call volunteers who want to help frame the issue of global warming to our local newspapers as the emergency it is by writing letters to the editor. The letters to the editor section of the newspaper is the second most read part of the newspaper and a great opportunity to get some good press. By joining this campaign you will receive email updates and talking points every other week, personal help with you letters on demand, and you will get the satisfaction of seeing your name in the paper when your letter gets published.

No Coal Resolution Advocate

Part of our strategy to fight the Wise County power plant and coal in Virginia is to get every local government to sign on to a resolution that states (oversimplified and in short): we don’t need more coal energy! Our goal is to get every City Council and every County Board to parlay their local power into pressure on their state legislator to stop this plant. We need community leaders to become Resolution Advocates, people who are willing to meet with their local elected officials to let them know that the Wise County power plant is a BIG ISSUE to their constituency. CCAN will help to prepare you for the meeting by briefing you on the subject, providing you with fact sheets and information, and we can even be present at the meeting to give you organizational support.

No Coal Petition Leader

To stop the proposed coal power plant, we need 100,000 signatures on a mile long petition in order to prove that we have the overwhelming support of Virginian’s in opposition to the plant. We need outgoing and energetic leaders to step up and help us reach our lofty goals. As a petition leader, your responsibilities will include petitioning, recruiting petitioners to help you, identifying hot sites to petition at, and acting as a liaison for people that need assistance with basic petitioning. This is a great way to build your leadership skills within the movement and help us inch closer to a mile long petition and a clean energy future.

Chapter Facilitator

In order to gain the momentum needed to sustain a real social movement, we need people that want to create a network of self reinforcing and semi-autonomous groups of activists – chapters. All good chapters need good leaders to call for meetings, facilitate discussions, brainstorm, and help ensure the chapter remains active in the fight to stop coal and global warming. Chapter facilitators are outgoing, motivated and helpful people – sounds like you, right?

Clean Energy House Partier

As anyone that has ever watched a good college movie from the 80s and 90s knows, partying is the solution to all of our problems. House parties are a great opportunity for friends, neighbors and community members to get together in an informal setting to discuss an issue of shared concern – coal and global warming. If you like mingling, watching great documentaries, and talking about global warming over cocktails, then it is time to become an official clean energy house partier.
