The Virginian-Pilot

By Mike Tidwell

Imagine a teenager's very messy room. Family members plead for a clean up. Finally, for a $10 "incentive" payment, the teen straightens up, declares compliance and dashes off to the 7-11 for $10 of snacks and soda. But sadly, family members enter the room only to find mounds of dirty dishes, soiled clothes and used tissues stuffed under the bed. A con job.

Now imagine that the room in question is Virginia's historically polluted air and our over-reliance on dirty, unsustainable fossil fuels. Who's the take-the-money-and-run offender in this case? Why, it's Dominion Virginia Power.

I have in the past criticized the Maryland state government for failing to implement its good intentions on developing alternatives to fossil fuels. The replacement of fossil fuels is essential to protecting our environment and fighting global warming.

Our view: Latest study finds Maryland has gone too far in promoting trash incinerators as a form of renewable energy

The Baltimore Sun Editorial

It's less than two months into the school year, and Gov. Martin O'Malley's grades have already slipped a little. He was marked down last week to a B+ from his usual glowing environmental marks by the Maryland League of Conservation Voters, largely on one issue: his failure to slow the proliferation of waste-to-energy incinerators in the state.

Supporters use poll to push for revived legislation

The Gazette

by Margie Hyslop

Buoyed by a poll that shows widespread support for offshore wind energy, some Maryland lawmakers say a deal is likely during the 2012 General Assembly session to pave the way for a wind farm off the coast of Ocean City.

“I think we’ll work this out this year, I think that average people support it — the price is not that high,” House Majority Leader Kumar P. Barve (D- Dist. 17) of Gaithersburg said Thursday.

Industry 'at a crossroads,' Obama official says

The Baltimore Sun

By Timothy B. Wheeler

Gov. Martin O'Malley vowed Tuesday to renew his stymied push for building wind turbines off Maryland's Atlantic Coast but said he's not sure yet what type of government incentive he'll ask lawmakers to approve for the industry next year.

A top Obama administration official, meanwhile, told attendees at an offshore wind conference in Baltimore that their industry stands "at a crossroads," creeping closer to being ready to build the first massive turbines off the Atlantic coast but running into significant political resistance toward continuing government incentives.

While Bart Hinkle's Sept. 13 column "Renewable energy: too cheap to meter?" that quoted us contained a number of exaggerated claims, he got one thing right — when it comes to electricity, what many people care about the most is cost. What he left out is what it's costing us not to develop Virginia's renewable energy resources, especially our vast offshore wind resource.

WAMU

Commentary by Mike Tidwell

I went to the White House and got arrested last week because I don't like hurricanes -- and I really didn't like Irene. The storm knocked out power to my Takoma Park home from Sunday to Monday and it took off the top of my chimney.

It is less than a mile from the new Martin Luther King memorial on the national mall to the White House. After 54 environmental protesters were arrested Friday morning in front of President Obama's residence the distance felt an inch or two shorter.
