Proposal for VA Hybrid Car Tax Likely Dead!

  Beth Kemler, Virginia State Director

Thanks to hundreds of calls and emails from CCAN supporters to lawmakers and a hybrid car parade at the capitol, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell's proposal for a $100 annual tax on hybrid and electric cars appears to be dead! Though we won't be able to say definitively that it's been defeated until the General Assembly session is over, it's looking very good.

McDonnell proposed the hybrid tax as part of his transportation funding plan, which includes other bizarre proposals, like making Virginia the only state without a gas tax.

Thanks to the outcry against the hybrid car tax, that measure was stripped from the House bill reflecting the Governor's transportation plan.  And while the Senate failed to pass a transportation bill before the "crossover" deadline, the two new versions of the Senate transportation bill that were offered by Republican senators, Senator Newman and Senator Wagner, both stripped the hybrid tax as well.  Therefore, it seems unlikely that this punitive tax idea will be added back into the transportation plan.  But never say never!

For an idea of how ridiculous this idea was, check out the below info-graphic we created that examines the math.
