Permitting for Dickerson
The Dickerson Generating Station is an 844-megawatt coal-fired power plant located in Dickerson, Maryland, near the Potomac River and the Dickerson Conservation Park. Owned by GenOn Energy, Inc., the 52-year-old plant consists of six individual turbines or generating units.
This plant is applying for a modified water pollution permit from the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE). This permit will be released for public comment in 2011, offering the public a chance to weigh in on the plant. It’s vital that MDE is aware that Montgomery County community members are invested in the permit revision process.
MDE will hold public hearings to give community members an opportunity to speak out about the Dickerson coal plant. Citizens should encourage the agency to fully consider the human health, environmental, and climate effects of the plant’s pollution while revising the permit to make it as strong as possible. MDE must hold this coal plant to the highest pollution standards. Stay tuned for more updates about these hearing dates in the coming months.
