Chalk Point Coal Plant

The Chalk Point Coal Plant The Chalk Point Coal Plant

A Prince George’s County coal-fired power plant, the Chalk Point Generating Station, is gearing up to apply for an updated water pollution permit. The permitting process presents a prime opportunity for local community members to get involved to ensure that the permit is as strong as possible in order to protect local waterways from pollutants.

Permitting for Chalk Point

The Chalk Point Generating Station is a 2,401-megawatt coal-fired power plant located in Aquasco, Maryland, on the shore of the Patuxent River. Owned by GenOn Energy, Inc., the 47-year-old plant consists of ten individual turbines and units.

This plant is applying for an updated water pollution permit from the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE). This permit will be released for public comment in 2011, offering the public a chance to weigh in on the plant. It’s vital that MDE is aware that Aquasco community members are invested in the permit revision process.

MDE will hold public hearings to give community members an opportunity to speak out about the Chalk Point coal plant. Citizens should encourage the agency to fully consider the human health, environmental, and climate effects of the plant’s pollution while revising the permit to make it as strong as possible. MDE must hold this coal plant to the highest pollution standards. Stay tuned for more updates about these hearing dates in the coming months.
