LTE Opportunity: The Best Holiday Gift Ever!
Posted by holly on 17 Dec 2008 | Tagged as: Federal Action, Letters to the Editor
Come January, we’ll be working nonstop to raise awareness about global warming solutions in Maryland and Virginia. Not only that, but we’ll also be focused on working with the new Congress to make climate a priority within the first 100 days of the next administration. This spring will be THE crucial time to pass climate legislation, and we’re going to have to give it our all.
But what can I do right now, you ask? This is the moment to be setting the stage for bold climate action come January, and we can start by getting some holiday stimulus LTE’s published! With the holiday season coming up, what better gift could we ask for than a green stimulus package and a New Year’s Resolution from our elected officials for truly bold climate action in 2009.
Articles to Check Out:
“Obama Pledges Massive Stimulus Package,” Baltimore Sun.
“More Green Jobs Than Ever.” Maryland Independent.
“Funding for Clean Energy Projects Can Provide Immediate Stimulus…” Press release from EESI.
And for those of you who need to feel an increased sense of urgency:
“Arctic Melt Passes Point of No Return.”
Talking Points:
- With the upcoming stimulus package, we have the unique opportunity to invest in new clean industries that will not only grow the economy, but create thousands of new jobs right here at home. I strongly urge our elected officials to make the recovery package as green and as equitable as possible.
- Any stimulus package must dedicate $250 million or more to fund the Green Jobs Act, the only authorized federal program designed to provide green-collar job training. The Green Jobs Act, which has not been adequately funded, will help about 25,000 workers a year get trained in placed in jobs retrofitting and repowering the country.
- We don’t just need more funding - America is ready for visionary targets that reduce global warming pollution in light with what scientists say is necessary and put us on track significantly curbing the effects of global warming.
If you write an LTE, post it below. And then let us know when you get published!
