The bill would create 1,500 jobs and keep more than half a million tons of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere per year. But fossil fuel interests are gearing up to kill the bill. Meanwhile, we’ll also update you on efforts to delay and potentially ban forever in Maryland the harmful gas drilling practice known as hydraulic “fracking.” Gov. O’Malley last year established a temporary statewide ban on fracking to allow a special commission to study the harmful impacts of such drilling by August 2014. Unfortunately, the commission has no funding to do its work! So a crucial bill must be passed this year by the General Assembly to fund the commission to examine all possible impacts, including harm to the climate from methane pollution.
